Shin Sawada Drama Shin Sawada, an 18 year old student, at Shirokin High School and the leader of the infamous class, known as "3-D". Shin was feared for an incident he caused in middle school, in which a teacher wrongly accused a student, and which Shin demands an apology to the student. However, the teacher refuses and Shin, in anger, punches him. Shin is the first to notice of Yankumi's strange behaviour as a teacher and quietly decides to keep an eye on her. In the drama he has a father, who works as a senator, and a younger sister, whom is overwhelmed by her parents, after Shin's leave. Shin now lives in his own apartment. Later, after graduating he decides to go abroad as a social worker. In a special episode, he confesses (though not actually to Yankumi) that's he in love with her, stating in the end, "That makes four of us". Manga/Anime Known only in the manga, Shin is often called, by Kyou-san, as "Young Master Red Lion". Here Shin has a father, who is a high ranking police official and an older brother, who has recently, "quit" college. Shin is often teased by his friends (mostly Uchi), of his liking for Yankumi. To everyone, (Kuroda, Kyou-san, Fuji, his friends) it is very obvious that he has an attraction to Yankumi. However, Shin never lies, about it, as when asked by Noda if he likes her, he stated simply, "I guess. Probably". However, Yankumi is completely obvious to his attraction. In the last manga chapter, he confessed that he is inlove with her and proceeds to kiss her, only to be punched out of Yankumi's obvious embarrassment. In a special chapter, Shin is shown to be a top student at Toudai University, having a stable life and car. He is also shown to be openly flirting with Yankumi, stating that the reason he was very cooperative from the beginning was that he was inlove with her. For the first time, he is shown with emotion, when one of Yankumi's new group of students trick her into a fight with a gang of bikers. He managed to save her and Yankumi finally returns his feelings and they ended up kissing. Kumiko "Yankumi" Yamaguchi Drama Kumiko "Yankumi" Yamaguchi, a newly hired 23 year old, at Shirokin High School. Yankumi teaches math and is usually ignored by her students, due to her being, unattractive. She is very idealistic, and is often too eager to help her students, helping them do their best to graduate. Yankumi's parents died at the age of 7. She was later taken in, by her grandfather, who is the current head of the of Oedo family; an influential Tokyo Ninkyo group. Because of this strange upbringing, Yankumi inherited a habit of using yakuza slang and a habit of running away, when confronted by cops. At a young age, Yankumi was constanly bullied, due to her yakuza background. It was at this age, that Yankumi had asked her grandfather to teach her to fight. Yankumi is the combined form of Kumiko and Yamaguchi (Ya + Kumi = Yankumi). It was originally made to annoy her, but the exact opposite happened. In each new season, Yankumi is transferred to a different school and falls inlove with a destined man each time. The first in Shirokin High School, second Kurogin High School, the third Akadou High School. Her first love interest is Shinohara, the second Kujo, and the third Natsume. Manga/Anime It was actually Kyo-san that taught her to fight. Yankumi is actually attracted to men wearing fundoshi, going into a trance when she saw Shin wearing one. She is completely oblivious to his feelings, going into a shock when he confessed that he was inlove with her, and punched him. In a special chapter, after saving her from a group of bikers, Yankumi finally returns Shin's feelings. A Perfect Pair? Why 1. They Constantly Rely On Each Other Whenever, there is a problem, whether it be fights or family problems, the one who is in trouble or feeling depressed usually goes to the other. Usually the talking starts with Kumiko and Shin listens to her quietly; always. They always talk about her problems on the rooftop, a place that Shin normally uses to sleep during the day. 2. He's Not Interested In Dating Shin is admired by many girls, and is usually being pursued by them. However, the thing is he is just not interested. Maybe it's because he's introverted, meaning that he doesn't want attention, but has attention anyways. Or maybe it's because he already found the perfect girl. The perfect girl being Kumiko. 3. He Tries To Be Act Macho In situations when their friend is in trouble, like the time when Fujiyama-sensei was kidnapped by some old perverted man, Shin really does try to act macho. He constantly tries to prove to Kumiko, that he is a man (though he does not state this directly) and not a boy. 4. She Constantly Relies On Him Being that Kumiko is usually brawns and less of a brawn, Kumiko usually relies on Shin. It certainly seems that the two share some kind of friendship; a deep one. And it is perhaps because of this reason, that she thinks of him as a friend. She values their friendship and always, always take his advice on almost every occasion. Sure, it may seem they are friends, but in another way, it certainly is more. 5. It Is Completely Obvious To Everyone Around Them Though Shin usually does not express his attraction to Kumiko, it is completely obvious to everyone around him. Everyone that is except for Kumiko. Noda is the first to notice this and asks if he likes Kumiko. In a rather, non-blushing way, Shin answers, "Probably". Another evidence of this is when Kyou-san, gives advice to him or wishes him good luck, on his pursuit of Kumiko. 6. They Are Often Put In Situations Together After the discovery of Shin's feelings for Kumiko, his friends usually try to get them in situations where they can be together, as a way to bring them closer. Usually, the ideas are by Uchi. Some of the situations include, trapping them in the janitor's closet, pairing them up as a couple on their rescue for Fujiyama, and inviting them to a festival, but never actually came so the two would be on a date. 7. They Were Mistaken As A Couple Being that they share a very close relationship and the fact that they are often caught in a situation together, many have come to believe, though for a brief moment, that the two of them are dating. The first is on their rescue for Uchi, where Shin tries to wake up Kumiko in a hotel, but Kumiko thought Shin was raping her and she ended up wrestling him off her, but instead wakes up Fujiyama, who thinks they are having sex. Another situation is when the two of them are both stuck in a janitor's closet and Kumiko tries to escape by climbing up, with the help of Shin, but accidentally falls. At the same time the door opens, which reveals Miura-sensei, who takes a snapshot of the two in a very compromising position. The last scene is was when Kumiko dragged Shin to meet with Ritsu, who mistook them for being on a date. 8. Romeo and Juliet Scene Shin was forcibly taken to his parent's (he lived in his own apartment) where his dad locked him there. Kumiko went to rescue him along with Kyou-san. Kumiko climbs up, Shin looks at her, and she says, "Yo! Ya know...don't you think the position's usually reversed?". Obviously she is referring to the famous Romeo and Juliet scene, as Romeo climbs up to Juliet's window. Shin's reaction to this is that he actually blushed, which is rare. Why Not 1. Shinohara Shinohara. The man through which the entire series, Kumiko is obsessed about or thinks she is in love with and Shin's rival for Kumiko's affection. Because of this it is rather difficult for Shin as Kumiko's thought are filled of Shinohara. Obviously it is a crush, from at a young age, but now in her adult years, Kumiko has come to believe that she is in love with him. 2. She Thinks Of Him Mainly As A Student Kumiko's dream was to become a teacher and to help delinquents, like Shin and his friends. Like the rest of her students, her thoughts on Shin are that of a student and not as a grown man. Even though he is very mature for his age, she still views of him as a student. 3. They Are Currently A Student And Teacher A relationship with a teacher can cause a teacher to be fired and a student to be expelled. Obviously this romance is forbidden. One of the reasons could be because the teacher could cause the student to actually suffer his/her grades. Another possible reason is because the teacher could perhaps, favor this student over the others, like for example giving good grades for no reason. 4. She's Yakuza, His Dad Is Involved With The Law Yes, their family business is the opposite. Sort of like a Romeo and Juliet play. Her family is involved with the yakuza which means they don't obey the law while his dad is a lawyer. This means off limits. How could two people from the opposite sides actually fall in love with each other? 5. She Is Oblivious To His Feelings For her age, Kumiko is completely oblivious to Shin's feelings. Perhaps it's because she only sees him as a friend? Perhaps it's because could she only thinks of him as a student? Maybe it's because she's very childish, especially when it comes to the way other people are feeling? Whatever, the reason is, it must be stated loud and clear. 6. He Is Not Direct With His Feelings Shin is a very reserved guy. He is very calm, likes to act cool, and usually thinks before he acts. He knows that Kumiko only thinks of him as a student and therefore does not do anything about it. Usually he will only act on his feelings if he feels that his chances for Kumiko is slipping off by Shinohara. He will wait until graduation.
