Paul, a rival of Ash in the Sinnoh region. Like Ash, Paul has also traveled through Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and now Sinnoh competing in each of their respective tournaments. He is a rude, but demanding trainer and expects nothing less than perfection to the pokemon he trains. Paul also has the tendency to release his pokemon if he deems them as weak. He also has a habit of checking his newly captured pokemon's stats to see if they are good enough to keep by using his pokedex.
Despite being rude to Ash, Dawn, and Brock and others whom he deem as weak, Paul does show respect to his elders. This goes to the same with his brother, Reggie, and occasion, Dawn. During a battle with Brandon, it was shown that before Paul traveled, Paul along with Turtwig had watched his brother's battle against Brandon, only to be defeated. This is what triggered Paul and made who he is today determined to achieve what his brother could not. Yet, despite his training, Paul like his brother suffered a loss against Brandon.
It is important to note that while they are rivals, Paul hardly acknowledges it. This is because he believes that Ash is a weak trainer. The only attention Paul ever showed to Ash was when he heard of Brandon's defeat against Ash.
Dawn
Dawn, a cute but spunky coordinator. Watching her mom participating in contests is what inspired her to become one as well. Yet, despite her enthusiasm, she is completely clueless. One example is when she was about to use a pokeball, but forgot to make it bigger only to be corrected by Ash. Dawn also has a bad case of directions; easily getting loss when by herself.
Dawn started her journey with Ash, though unlike May or Misty it was not because of bike damage. Rather, she decided to go with him. Though this was partially due because Dawn admires him which could be mistaken as a crush by some fans. Dawn is also the first of the girls to cheer for Ash in a cheerleading outfit during his gym battles. Also unlike Misty or May, Dawn is completely obssessed with her hair, often freaking out when it becomes really frizzy.
Dawn also has name problems and often gets mad when someone teases her about it. One such example is when Kenny calls her "DeeDee" though the origin of the nickname is unknown as Dawn refuses to let Kenny or herself talk about it. Another example is when she stopped a fight with Paul and Ash, during which Paul frowns because he believes they haven't met leading to Dawn's angry responce as she nearly pounces on him, but was held back by Brock.
A Perfect Pair?
Why
1. She Is Usually The First To Notice Him
This particular hint was expressed at least twice in the whole series. The first was with Ash's battle with Roark, when Paul decided he had enough of watching the trainer lose. The second was after the tag battles in which Paul was teamed up with Paul.
2. He Is Not Harsh With Her As He Is With Others
If you had watch the episode where Dawn, Ash, and Brock, became lost at a maze and Dawn's talk with Ash and Paul after the their tag battle, you would see that Paul calmly spoke with her. Almost as if he didn't mind her there. Yet, when Paul talks to Ash or Brock he appears very irritated.
4. She Appears Infatuated
As Paul walks away from the group, after releasing his chimchar, Dawn is slightly separated from the group and is looking at Paul's retreating figure. One could say that she was infatuated with him.
5. Opposites Attract
Dawn, the overly active girl, Paul the calm, yet rude boy. One could say that the two would never get along, much less even get together. Yet, others say it is this
6. Both Of Their Hometowns Are Near A Lake
Though their hometowns are both separate (Dawn from Twinleaf Town and Paul from Veilstone City) both are located near a lake close to their home. Coincidence? I don't think so. Also on a sidenote, Lake Verity, the lake near Dawn's hometown means "Shinji"? Another coincidence? I. Don't. Think. So.
Why Not
1. He Needs To Lighten Up
If Paul continues the way he is acting now (training his pokemon) then I highly doubt that Dawn will ever like him as it shown that she disagress with the way he is training his pokemon.
2. Their Interactions Are Rare
Though they do have their moments when one of them interacts with the other it is rare.
